Learn how to generate images with text prompts in Adobe InDesign

Updated: Apr 30

Another AI-powered tool is now available in the latest version of Adobe InDesign, and this may be the most significant update the application has seen in several years.

The new Text to Image feature allows you to use text prompts to generate images on the fly – saving you time and improving your workflow.

In this tutorial, let's walk through the new feature, which uses Adobe Firefly's Generative AI tools to create images and artwork.

Before getting started, you'll have to download the latest version of InDesign (19.4), which offers the Text to Image panel in Beta.

Use the link below to download the InDesign document and follow along step-by-step in this tutorial.

Text to Image

  • Go to Window > Text to Image (Beta) to launch the new panel.

  • Click on the image frame that is placed in the layout, or if you're working on your own layout, create a new rectangle frame.

  • In the prompt box, write a descriptive prompt for the image you would like to generate. Keep in mind, the more descriptive and specific your prompt, the greater the result.

  • For this tutorial, the prompt we'll use for this recipe card layout will be as follows: spicy black bean taco tex mex plated on a white marble table.

  • In the Content Type dropdown, choose Photo.

  • Choose an Aspect Ratio pre-set or set the ratio for your specific frame dimensions. In this tutorial, we'll do the latter.

InDesign will generate three variations of your prompt to choose from and if you're not satisfied you can click generate again to get three more variations. You can also fine-tune or add to your text prompt and generate other versions.

Here's a slide of the steps as explained above:

That is your contextual task bar. You can show/hide it by going to Window > Contextual Task Bar. I believe you can also pin it to certain areas of your workspace if it's in your way.
