Create Realistic Mockups in Adobe Illustrator with the Mockup Panel

Want to see how your logo or artwork would look on real-world products without spending time creating mockups from scratch? With Create Mockup in Adobe Illustrator, you can transform flat vector artwork into realistic product mockups in just a few clicks.
This AI-powered feature automatically adjusts your artwork to follow the shape, perspective, and contours of objects in a photograph. Whether you're creating branding concepts, product packaging, or promotional materials, the Mockup tool makes it easy to visualize your designs without manually warping or distorting your artwork.
In this tutorial, you'll learn how to preview your designs using built-in mockups, create custom mockups using your own images, and refine your artwork for realistic results.
Before getting started, you can download the tutorial exercise files by clicking the link below:
Step 1: Open the Mockup Panel
Start by opening your document in Adobe Illustrator.
From the main menu, go to Window > Mockup to open the Mockup panel.
Within this panel, you'll find a collection of predefined mockups organized into categories, including branding graphics, apparel, devices, and packaging.
To quickly preview your artwork on different products:
Select your vector logo or artwork.
In the Mockup panel, click Preview Mockup.
Browse the available mockups to see how your artwork looks on different objects.
This is a great way to experiment with different applications before creating your final mockup.
Step 2: Create a Custom Mockup
While Illustrator provides a variety of predefined mockups, you can also use your own photographs.
For this example, we'll place a fictional Street Food logo onto the side of a food truck.
The Illustrator document contains two artboards: one with the vector logo and another with a photograph of the food truck.
To create the mockup:
Select the Street Food logo using the Selection Tool.
Hold Shift and select the food truck image.
In the Mockup panel, click Create Mockup.
Illustrator will analyze the photograph and automatically apply the selected artwork to the image.
During this process, Illustrator identifies the object's shape, perspective, and surface characteristics to help create a realistic result.
Once the mockup is generated, your logo will appear directly on the photograph.
Step 3: Adjust the Artwork Placement
After generating the mockup, you can make further adjustments to the size and placement of your artwork.
To edit the logo:
Double-click the logo on the mockup to enter Isolation Mode.
Select the artwork and reposition it on the food truck.
Resize the logo as needed to achieve the desired composition.
Click away from the artwork to deselect it.
Press Escape to exit Isolation Mode.
As you reposition or resize the artwork, Illustrator automatically adapts it to the surface of the object.
This eliminates the need to manually adjust the perspective or use traditional distortion tools.
Tip:Â When creating a custom mockup, Illustrator moves your selected vector artwork from its original position into the mockup. If you'd like to preserve the original design on your artboard, create a duplicate before generating the mockup.
Step 4: Release Artwork from a Mockup
What if you want to remove the artwork from the mockup and use it elsewhere?
Illustrator allows you to release the artwork without having to recreate your design.
To release the logo:
Right-click the mockup.
Hover over Mockup in the context menu.
Choose Release.
Your artwork will be separated from the mockup, allowing you to reposition it on your artboard or use it in another design.
For this example, we'll keep the Street Food logo on the food truck.
Step 5: Apply Artwork to a Curved Surface
Generate Mockup is especially useful when working with curved or rounded objects.
Unlike a flat surface, curved objects traditionally require additional adjustments to make artwork appear as though it's naturally wrapping around the product.
For this next example, we'll apply a fictional skincare brand logo to a cosmetic cream jar.
To get started:
Select the skincare logo.
Hold Shift and select the photograph of the cosmetic jar.
In the Properties panel, click Generate Mockup.
Allow Illustrator to analyze the image and apply the artwork.
Once the mockup is generated, double-click the artwork to enter Isolation Mode.
Hold Shift while resizing the logo, and adjust its position until you're happy with the placement.
Notice how Illustrator automatically wraps the logo around the curved surface of the jar, following its natural contours.
What's especially impressive is how part of the logo can appear hidden behind the jar's lid.
Illustrator accounts for the positioning of objects in the photograph, creating a more realistic appearance without requiring you to manually warp or mask the artwork.
Step 6: Adjust the Blending Mode for Added Realism
For an additional layer of realism, you can adjust how the logo blends with the product's surface.
In this example, we'll use a blending mode to help integrate the logo into the cosmetic jar's label.
With the artwork selected, locate the Opacity settings.
Open the blending mode dropdown.
Choose Multiply.
Reduce the Opacity to 90%Â to slightly soften the artwork.
The Multiply blending mode allows the artwork to interact with the underlying tones of the photograph, helping the logo appear more naturally integrated into the product label.
You can experiment with different blending modes and opacity values depending on your artwork and the surface you're working with.
