Generate Podcasts From Your InDesign Magazine Layouts

Whether you're on the go or just busy with work, having another way of consuming information in digital publishing documents can make life a little easier.

In this tutorial, learn how to listen to your digital publishing projects from InDesign by exporting a PDF, launching it in Acrobat and using the brand new Generate Podcast feature to convert the magazine into an engaging podcast.

Click the link below to download the InDesign document and follow along with the tutorial.

For context, the magazine spreads have three articles in total:

  1. A feature story on a woman CEO who launched a creative business and took it global

  2. A story on how AI is reshaping the way brands are connecting with consumers

  3. A small piece on 4 ways AI will make life easier on customers in 2026

This is important as the Acrobat will pull and extract information from these articles to create the podcast.

Export PDF

  • Open the InDesign document saved as Business Magazine.

  • Go to File > Export.

  • From the format dropdown, choose PDF (Print) and click Save.

  • In the PDF Export options window, choose All Pages and Spreads.

  • Under Viewing, choose Fit Page.

  • Select View PDF after exporting so it opens automatically.

Now that we have the PDF, it's time to open it in Acrobat and generate the podcast.

It's important to note that Generate Podcast will only be available with Acrobat Pro and Acrobat Studio versions. Basic Acrobat or Acrobat Reader will not have not option to generate podcast.

Generate Podcast

  • Once the PDF is open in Acrobat, click the All Tools tab in the main menu.

  • From the left menu, choose Generate Podcast.

This will launch the Generate Podcast window, which will give you two options: Quick highlights and Deep Dive. For this example, choose Deep Dive.

The podcast will take a few moments to generate based on the size of the document and amount of information being extracted.

In the control bar, you can click the play icon to instantly play the podast, or click the transcript icon to view the back-and-forth conversation between the two hosts.

The control bar also has handy features such as rewind and skip ahead buttons – both which will go back or ahead by 15 second increments. There's also a playback speed option if you want to listen to the podcast faster or slower.

The podcast is also available for mobile devices through the Adobe Reader app for iOS or Android. Simply open the same PDF and click the Podcast button to access the same podcast produced in Acrobat on desktop for mobile device.
