Adobe Photoshop released a game-changing feature that now allows you to rotate any 2D flat image in three dimensions.
Rotate Object in Photoshop converts flat pixel layers into rotatable objects, perfect for creating 3D models while matching the lighting and shadows of the scene.
The Photoshop version with this new feature is 27.6.0.
In this tutorial, get a quick overview of how this new feature works. To download the image for this tutorial and follow along, click the link below.
Before getting started, open the Contextual Taskbar by making your way up to Window > Contextual Taskbar. This is where the new Rotate Object feature will be located so it's important to have it open for this tutorial.
🔹 Step 1:
With the image placed, use Command/Ctrl + T to go into Free Transform. You can also go to Edit Free Transform as another option.
🔹 Step 2:
In the Contextual Taskbar, click Rotate Object. This will remove the background and a low-resolution preview will appear.
🔹 Step 3:
Use the canvas controls to rotate, tilt and adjust the perspective of the image. These controls will also be visible in the Contextual Taskbar for more precise settings.
🔹 Step 4:
Click Done to apply the rotation settings. This typically takes a few moments to fully generate the result using AI. Once completed, the image will go from low resolution to high resolution.
🔹 Step 5:
For another layer of realism, in the Contextual Taskbar, click Harmonize to blend the image in the scene and match the lighting and shadows. Choose from one of three variations using the next and previous arrows in the Contextual Taskbar.
Rotations can always be edited by selecting the original layer and then clicking Edit Rotation in the Contextual Taskbar.
